Days of Humility

  • Nov. 27th, 2009 at 11:34 AM
Well, the last two days I've been working at the coffee shop. Why is it that the minimum wage jobs are always the hardest to do?
I'm trying to wrap my brain around extra shots and no whip and dopios and extra hot and skinnies...
Hopefully the managers not hating my questions every two minutes.
And all this for less than half of what I was getting at the last job. If I keep up what I'm working I will have about...$50 extra a month...whoo hoo!
As of right now I have no idea how I'm paying rent.
It's really fustrating watching all these yuppies buy their $6 drinks a day or twice a day while I'm wondering if I have anything to eat and the whole time they look down on you even though I probably have more education than they do.
Oh well, I work in half an hour, better get ready for another day of humility.

Happy...

Dancing Queen

  • Nov. 24th, 2009 at 2:04 AM
Just saw a really bad movie tonight, Prom Queen, the story of Marc Hall...gag!
It moved sooooo slowly and the acting was bad and the dialogue was soooo laboured. You could tell it was a made for TV movie cause it was cut up into segments and the "dramatic" coloured set lights throughout.

I had my Flamenco dance recital on Saturday, I think it went ok. I'm trying to train myself to naturally have better posture while dancing so when I'm dancing infront of others I can concentrate on what I'm doing and not how I'm doing it cause I probably looked like an ape all hunched over up there. I'll hopefully see the vid taken tomorrow and see how it looks..I didn't fall or really screw up so thats a bonus right?

Cookbook project #4.5

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 PM
Remember my cookbook project? Where I was supposed to cook a recipe from every cookbook I own? And abandoned after 4 times? I'm starting it again. I made a new recipe tonight but I forgot I had already done this book. I'm posting it anyway though, even though I can't count it.

BOOK: Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home
RECIPE: Risotto with carrots and feta
VERDICT: The reason I chose this recipe is that we are still broke and I am still trying not to spend too much money. This means using things we already have. The crisper was down to carrots, a yam and a shallot, so I was limited in terms of veggies. I selected the first recipe I came across that I had all the ingredients for. Anyway, it was really good! I love risotto, and this was a nice one - it has dill in it, and you simmer the carrots in the broth before cooking the rice so they're all nice and tender. The feta (added at the end) goes really well with it. The only changes I made were to use a shallot instead of the onion it called for, and I left out the optional parsley because we didn't have any. It wasn't much work - same as any other risotto, you just have to be there to keep an eye on it. I would totally make this again.

Wide Nose Man

  • Nov. 23rd, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Funny, just did one of those face attractiveness test thingies that looks at your symetry and such. It said that my nose was too wide for my face and my eyes were too close together and I thought...nose too wide? How do they think that? What is the canon of beautiy that they are using? There are whole races that this tester wouldn't apply to... I'm guessing they are using the sculpted jaw, Arian type of beauty that I certainly don't fall under.

Makes me wonder...What do you find attractive physically in a person...man or woman?

Some people might not see this as a vital concern but I'm losing my ass. I'm losing weight which might be good but I think my ass is a casualty. My jeans are getting too lose :(
I like my ass...I'm scared.

Surgery, Birthdays and Recitals

  • Nov. 21st, 2009 at 2:14 AM
I'm worried about my brother in law and my sister to boot. His dad was rushed to the hospital for a surgery that he might not come out of. He's already in a coma and they need to operate so that took both of them away from my moms birthday and the weekend with my family so they could go to Saskatoon to be with the family. I hope everything goes ok...

In more happy news, my mom's 60th is tomorrow, a whole lot of people will be here and theres a lot to get done. Now that my sister will be gone it's up to me to make sure that all of her h'orderves get made and served...thank whatever it's a tapas potluck so there is lots of food coming.

In the middle of the party I need to skip out and run into town for my Flamenco recital that I HAVE NOT practiced for at all, the past few days has been pretty full and my hip has been bothering me so I haven't gone through the dance at all and it's a real doozie. I'm pretty sure I have all the foot work and the basic arm movements down but I haven't refined anything and of course because I'm one of the few men in the studio Barb the instructor has put me and Carlos in the front of our group when we perform so I won't have anyone to hide behind or watch to make sure I'm not screwing up. I know the people in the audience won't know the difference if I mess up but I, the rest of the dancers and expecially Barb will know...yikes! And the kicker is that I will be missing the rest of the dancing cause right after my set I need to leave and get back to the party and my mom is upset cause she will be missing my performance as well.
Whatever, I am really happy with the progress in my dancing, looking at video from a year ago I know I've have really improved and it makes me super excited to see how I will be in 1, 2, 5 years from now.

Wish me lots of luck.

Book club spread

  • Nov. 20th, 2009 at 8:09 PM
I am hosting book club on Sunday and therefore making food. We read "Wicked - The Life and Times of the WIcked Witch of the West", which was my pick. It was good. I really loved the first half - the second slightly less - but I want to read more books by this author.

Anyway, the amount of food that's been provided the last few meetings is insane. Not just a plate of cookies, but cookies AND cake AND a cheese plate AND fruit AND nuts AND tarts... not to mention tea and coffee. Because of being broke, I am trying to make do with what we have around. Fortunately we had a lot of flour and butter and sugar. So here is my plan:

- Mandarin oranges (they were 2 bags for the price of one last time I went grocery shopping, and we still have tons)
- Cranberry orange loaf (in the oven right now)
- Chocolate chip cookies (dough made)
- Cardamom butter cookies (dough made)
- Italian herb bread (will throw in the breadmaker the morning of) with shallot butter (made)
- tea and coffee - we have lots of both, but I should probably go buy some cream. that should be the only thing I have to purchase though.

Not bad for a cupboard-scrounge spread!

Postcard winners!

We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude for sending so much joy our way. Frank is still blushing with excitement over the love notes, proposals, propositions, and occasional intimate photos sent from his admirers around the world (China, Norway, Japan, and Poland just this week)! At his request, we blindfolded Justin, one of Frank's BFFs, spun him around in five dozen counterclockwise circles, and asked him to point to ten random postcards/envelopes pasted to the wall. After a brief trip to the bathroom, he chose the following lucky winners, to whom we will give a six-month paid account token (for paid, basic, and plus users) or, for our permanent account holders, a $15 voucher for the LiveJournal gift shop.

So, without further ado, the winners are:
